Meet our January 2012 Guest Artist - Jan Hunnicutt!

I am sure you have noticed throughout the month, we have had a new name attached to some of the cards that have been shared on our blog. They are from our January Guest Artist - Jan Hunnicutt!! Jan was the lucky winner of our very first Guest Artist drawing when she participated in our November '11 challenge. She received the entire January digital release and has been posting Whimsie Doodles creations on her blog this month.

Today I would like to share a little bit more about Jan, in her own words…

I'm married to a wonderful man who supports and enables my paper craft addiction. We have two grade school age kids living at home and three adult children. We live in a small town in western Arizona along the Colorado River, both my husband and I have lived in the area most of our lives.

I love all kinds of craft/home decor/renovation projects. I've been a card maker since 2004 and have discovered digital images and Copic markers in the last couple of years; I'm in paper crafters heaven!

For "work" I'm a volunteer for Operation Write Home who's mission is: Supporting our nation's armed forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.

I also volunteer as a design team coordinator for a paper crafting challenge blog and I'm a team member for a couple of other design teams. I'm very excited to be a guest designer for Whimsie Doodles this month!

Up cycle Paper clips by making fish hooks!

Hi everyone, I had a brain storm the other day and came up with a cute embellishment for the our newest digi "Great Catch" and a paperclip

Step 1

Bend the end of the paper clip just above the bottom loop to the right at a 90 degree angle.

Step 2

Now bend the end back at a 45 degree angle leaving a small space.

Step 3

Move down a little further down and bend the clip end down to form the arrow point.

Step 4

Bend the final end piece of the clip 90 degrees toward the centre.

Trim any access.

Step 5

Bend the top of the paper clip completely around to form a loop, wrap around the clip stem and trim access.

Ta da!! A Fishhook!

Tuesday Tutorial: Mini Dry Erase Board

I thought today would be a good day to share a quick and easy holiday gift idea with you! I was inspired after seeing a post on Pinterest for making coasters using tiles and decoupaging decorative napkins on them (super cute, by the way).

My idea is similar, only instead of using the finished product as a coaster,

I am using mine as a mini dry erase board!

Here is what you need:

- 4 x 4" tile (smooth works best)

- 4 x 4' piece of thin paper or tissue paper

- stamps or digital stamps

- decoupage

-mini easel or frame holder for display

If you are stamping with rubber stamps, simply stamp your image or sentiment directly on the paper or tissue. Then using the decoupage, adhere the paper to the tile. Cover entire top of tile with another layer of decoupage. If you are using digital stamps, you can print your images on regular paper, rather than cardstock, and proceed the same way once you cut the paper down to size.

Once your decoupage dries (I'd leave it overnight to be sure), you can use a dry erase marker to leave little notes, jot down a list or even take a message :)

The sentiment on my tile is from a retired Whimsie Doodles rubber stamp set.

A Note and a Freebie From Melyssa!

A few weeks ago I made some goody bags for dogs and I just wasn't happy with the results so they sat in a little box till I could figure out what to do with them. Then last night I had an idea. It involved a lot of searching around my house to find a printer I "stored" away. Then I had to find the ink!! Finally I had everything I needed to print these "Good Dog Holiday Treats" free digi!! There aren't a lot of embellishments (just some ribbon and twine) but I'm really happy with the results.

Bringing you a simple project for the upcoming holidays using a few Whimsie Doodles' patterns this week...so let's get started.

Supplies:
Whimsie Doodles Pattern (used little snowman: arm and bird along with bon bon: holly leaves) Frame
Fabric (used canvas and a layer of cotton fabric on back side)
Glimmer Mist
Alpha Stickers (used Webster's pages for this)
Embroidery Thread
Felt
Silk Ribbon
Buttons
Twine
Bells
Craft Glue

1. To begin, take cardboard or frame insert to cut out fabric to fit.
2. Cut out patterns as you have printed out, apply a little adhesive to the backside to stick to fabric while applying mist. Layout cutout pieces, letters and string as desired.
3. Spray an even coat of Glimmer Mist on fabric. Once dry, remove paper pieces, stickers and thread. Note: I stitched along thread outlines just for a little more detail.
4. Punch three small holes in a piece of paper, which covers the entire fabric area, to create berries. Use red mist and allow to dry. Apply a little glitter glue and glitter to berries.
5. Place inside frame. Add ribbon, felt holly leaves (hand cut) and bells to frame.

This is a simple project which takes about thirty minutes to create, not including the drying time which varies depending on the amount of mist you use and type of fabric. Enjoy!

Tuesday Tutorial: Frankenstein Treat Holder

So it all started with these coupons....I'm slightly obsessed with those, you know. And I had these coupons that basically gave me full size candy treats of the M&M variety, on the super cheap. Knowing that I would the hero of the third grade and of my third grader, for bringing in the BIG treats, I had to think of some cute way of wrapping them up!

We've already made some mini Crunch Bar mummies this year for the reading class....

So, when I saw the Freaky Little Friends Whimsie Doodles set, I was totally inspired by the "Friend. Good." Frankenstein image.... and this is what I came up with!

You will need a 2.25 x 10" strip of green card stock, scored at the 1" and 4.5" marks. You will also need various scraps in black, white and the same green. I used a tab punch, 2 different circle punches and a border punch for the different details. I made Frankie's cheeks rosy using chalks, and his nose sticks out with the help of a 3D dot. I cut the strips for his mouth free hand.

Step 1:

Cut and score!

Step 2:

Fold and adhere!

Step 3:

Punch and adhere his hair!

Step 4:

Punch out eye pieces, nose and head bolts (aka tab punch) and adhere.

Add color to cheeks with chalks.

Step 5:

Add mouth detail and treat.....

Have you ever wondered how to create your own felt and fabric embellishments...even if you may not be a sewing or stitching expert? Today I wanted to share with you how you can create your very own using just a few simple supplies and these adorable new patterns from Whimsie Doodles!

Supplies: Whimsie Doodles pattern, Steam-A-Seam Double Stick Fusible Web, fabric, felt, craft glue, embellishments and stamps.

1. Print out pattern to desired size on a regular piece of printer paper. Remember the images can be cropped and resized for your needs.
2. To create a fabric covered felt piece, iron together fabric and felt (sandwich fusible web between layers) until bonded. Once cooled, pin pattern to piece and cut. This dresses up your felt and give fabric the volume and stiffness that works best for constructing these.
3. Use fusible web or craft glue to add each piece to basic body piece (I used craft glue as it was slightly easier). Once all constructed, add craft glue to back side and adhere one more layer of felt, trimming along edge, leaving a little border to outline piece.
4. Add embellishments as desired. Stamp sentiment if using as embellishments.

Here I created two embellishments which I then can use for storage on a piece of clear plastic or give as a gift to others...
This is the easiest way to get a handmade piece without the sewing machine. Remember also that you do not need to use each piece provided in the pattern. Sometimes I find it easier to die cut tiny parts (such as an eye) using my existing dies. They are ready to be used in any way you desire.

Tuesday Tutorial: Felt Owl Magnet

Today's tutorial will help you make your own adorable felt magnet using the Halloween Hootenannies! Don't have colored felt? No worries! You can use your Copic refills to customize white felt. Enjoy!

Step 1: Print pattern and trace onto felt pieces.

Step 2: Cut felt pieces

Step 3: Pour Copic refill ink into baggie and add a little water.

Then add white felt pieces.

Step 4: Use a new baggie for each colour.

Assemble pieces, stitch details and buttons.

Step 5: Punch a Zig Zag border and use as a template.

Step 6: Use the dots for stitching pattern.

Step 7: Stitch both sides and top of owl to a felt back.

Stuff and add magnet. Stitch the bottom to close. Finish with bow.

When sewing and Whimsie Doodles come together it is a perfect match. This month, popping up in the shop, you should have noticed a collection of new patterns. Perfect for fabric, felt and paper. Today I bring you two projects that demonstrate how to use these patterns for gifts or home decor.Here I used the "little pumpkin" pattern to create a Halloween decoration which can easily be assembled. Use an embroidery loop, fabric, felt and your favorite pattern and begin to cut, sew and embellish. For the pumpkin I used a felt background so the fabric would stand out.Topped the loop off with a fabric border, large gingham ribbon and felt leaves (Quickutz). Added a few felt stars and stick pins to the pumpkin to add more color. Now, when fabric and felt become one...
This "little lion" pattern is my favorite. Reminds me of my little men when they were babies and wish I would have sewn then. Using fabric and felt, fuse together using interfacing and iron. This makes the lion easier to cut and gives it more volume to show off the stitching and lines of the pattern.
There are so many ways to use these patterns and can't wait to share more as the weeks go on. Hope this inspires you to take out your sewing supplies and make something your can treasure for a lifetime.
